Das Wort Tantra (Sanskrit Gewebe, Kontinuum, Zusammenhang ; Befreiung von Begierde(Tanha) ) ist ein hauptsächlich im Shivaismus[1] und im Vajrayana - Buddhismus gebräuchlicher Begriff. Die meisten dieser Texte wurden zwischen dem 8. und 12. Jahrhundert verfasst. Diese Literatur wird als Tantra-Shastra bezeichnet.

Manchmal wird auch zwischen rechtem (weissen) Tantra, gelbem Tantra (Reichtum), rotem Tantra(Sexualpraktiken) und schwarzem Tantra(Zerstörung von negativen Kräften und alternativ Mißbrauch von okkulten Kräften (schwarze Maya - Meister; Rigveda, III,38.7.; IX,83.3) unterschieden.

Im Shivaismus beinhaltet der Tantrismus die esoterischen Geheimnisse (rahasya-sampradayā). Das shivaistische Tantra ist meistens in Form eines Dialoges zwischen einer Form von Shiva und einer Konsortin wie Parvati niedergelegt. In den Agamas ist Shiva der Lehrende und Parvati die Zuhörerin.
Die shivaistischen Tantraklassen beinhalten 92 Schriften :
- Die 64 Bhairava - Tantras[8] [9]oder kashmirshivaistischen Tantras sind rein monistisch (Abheda :ohne Unterscheidung) und werden in 8 Gruppen aufgeteilt.
- Die 18 Rudra - Tantras sind Bhedābheda ('mit Unterscheidung und ohne Unterscheidung') oder 'monistisch und dualistisch'.
- Die restlichen 10 Śiva - Tantras sind Bheda ('differenziert') oder dualistisch.
Die Rudra - Tantras und die Śiva - Tantras werden von den Śaiva Siddhāntins verwendet und sind daher als Shaiva Siddhanta Tantras oder Śaiva Siddhānta Āgamas bekannt. Der aus dem kashmirischen Shivaismus bekannte Kulanarva Tantra ist eine tantrische vielfach missinterpretierte Geheimlehre.
Tantrische Sadhana
Die tanrischen Hauptgötter im Hinduismus haben einen weiblichen Gegenpart(Shakti). Daher gibt es zumeist auch eine tantrische Sadhana(Achara) :
- Vedacara[10] (Vedische Gebote, vedische Mantren, Agni als Ishta-Deva)
- Vaishnavacara (Vishnu - Tantra, Vishnu ist der Ishta-Deva)
- Shaivacara (Shiva-Tantra, Shiva ist der Ishta-Deva)
- Shaktacara [11] : Dakshinacara (rechter Weg, religiöse Gebote)
- Vamacara (linker Pfad, bricht religiöse Tabus und kehrt alles bewusst um)[12] (pañca-makăra) : Fisch, Fleisch, Madya, getrocknete Körner, Maithuna (ritualisierter Geschlechtsakt der sog. Viryas) - die Panchamakaras sind eigentlich symbolisch zu verstehen
- Kaulacara [13][14]
Die betreffenden Ācāras werden dementsprechend klassifiziert : Veda, Vaiṣṇava, Śaiva, Dakṣiṇa, Vāma, Siddhāṇta und Kaula. Zusätzlich wird in die zwei Kategorien Dakṣiṇa(rechts) and Vāma aufgeteilt[15]. Das tantrische Brahma Yamala unterscheidet dakshina, madhyama und vama entsprechend den drei Gunas.
Anwendung in der Sadhana finden
- Yoga - (Atemübungen, Asanas) mit Willenskontrolle
- Mudras oder Gesten
- Mantras oder Silben, Worte und Phrasen
- Nyasa - Visualisierung von Meditationsgottheiten
- Mandala - Visualisierung
- Yantras
Die Schriften sind bewußt in einer Geheimsprache oder Zwielichtsprache(Sandhabhasa) formuliert, so daß der Uneingeweihte wenig versteht oder mißversteht.
Buddhismus
Das Tantra (rgyud, Kontinuum)[16] des Vajrayana ist ein kompliziertes System, welches im Anuttarayoga-Tantra mit Hilfe einer Zwielichtsprache beschrieben wird.
Der Ausdruck wird zuerst im Guhyasamāja erwähnt : 'Tantra wird Kontinuität genannt, und das Tantra wird in drei Aspekte eingeteilt: Boden zusammen mit seiner Natur und Unabdingbarkeit. Die Natur ist die grundlegende Ursache, Boden heißt die Methode, und unabdingbar ist das Ergebnis. Die Bedeutung von Tantra ist in diesen drei enthalten.'
Chandrakirti beschreibt fünf Stufen des Tantra:
1. Die Generationsstufe
2. Die Vollendungsphase
3. Isolierung
4. Der Scheinkörper und das klare Licht
5. Einheit
Die Lehren des Tantra haben hier eine äußere, eine innere und eine geheime Bedeutung. Die Eigenschaften, die durch eine bestimmte Gottheit überwunden werden, erscheinen oft symbolisch als Attribute dieser Gottheit.
Traditionell erfordern höhere Tantras eine Ermächtigung und Übertragung von einem qualifizierten Guru oder Lama bevor sie studiert und praktiziert werden. Sie wurden daher in der Regel nicht öffentlich diskutiert.
Die tantrischen Yogatechniken des Mahayoga, des Anuyoga und des Atiyoga(Dzogchen) bauen aufeinander auf. Das Krṣṇayamāri zählt 4 Stufen der Yogapraxis auf : Yoga, Anuyoga, Atiyoga and Mahāyoga.
