Mahāvastu (Skt. : Großes Ereignis, große Geschichte) ist ein Text Lokottaravāda School des frühen Buddhismus, der zwischen 200 BCE und 400 CE kompiliert wurde. Es sieht sich selbst als als historisches Vorwort zu den buddhistischen Klostercodes (vinaya). Die Verse sind in einer Mischung aus Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit verfasst.
Mehr als die Häfte des Textes beinhaltet Jātaka- und Avadāna - Erzählungen, Ereignisse früherer leben des Buddha und anderer Bodhisattvas.
