Die Prajapatis sind eine Gruppe von Göttern, die über die Schöpfung residieren und diese auch schützen.

Sie sind zu unterscheiden von Ka Prajapati(IAST: prajā-pati : Gott der Wesen), der nach dem Shatapatha-Brahmana der Herr aller Geschöpfe ist[1].

Die Prajapatis werden im Bhagavata-Purana, im Vishnu - Purana und im Mahabharata erwähnt.

Das Bhagavata-Purana 8.8.16 nennt Vishvakarman als Führer der Prajāpatis, die 11 Söhne von Brahma, die Nachkommen erzeugen(Manasputras):

  1. Vishvakarman, Marichi, Atri(der im Ramayana von Rama und Sita besucht wird), Angiras, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Vasishtha, Prachetas oder Daksha, Bhrigu

Im Mahabharata erwähnt der Weise Narada[2] [3] 14 Prajapatis (Prajabewahrer)[4], allerdings ohne Vishvakarman:

  1. Daksha, Prachetas, Pulaha, Marichi, Kashyapa, Bhrigu, Atri, Vaśisht́ha, Gautama, Angiras, Pulastya, Kratu, Prahlada und Kardama.

Sie werden als Verwalter der vierzehn Welten, d.h. der 7 Lokas und 7 pa-talas angesehen

Das Vishnu - Purana[5] nennt einen weiteren üblen Brahma-Sohn Adharma und seine üble Familie.
