Das Mahāvyutpatti(von Sanskrit mahā „groß“, vyutpatti „Ableitung, Etymologie“) entstand um 810 in dem Bestreben, eine standardisierte tibetische Terminologie für Sanskrit - Begriffe zu schaffen.
Im Laufe der Zeit entstanden weitere Ausgaben mit Übersetzungen ins Chinesische, Mongolische und Mandschurische.
