Bhadantācariya Buddhaghosa (Pali : Stimme des Buddha) wurde Ende des 4. Jahrhunderts als Sohn eines Brahmanen in der Nähe von Bodhgaya (Indien) geboren. Er war ein bedeutender Gelehrter des Theravada-Buddhismus.

Werke

Buddhaghosa’s Hauptwerk ist der Visuddhimagga (Weg der Reinheit), welcher eine Überarbeitung und Erweiterung des Vimutti-Magga (Weg zur Erlösung) von Upatissa Thera beinhaltet. Es ist heute ein Standardwerk im Theravada-Buddhismus.

Der Visuddhimagga veruscht eine systematische Zusammenfassung der Praxis des ursprünglichen Buddhismus auf der Basis von Dokumentationen verschiedener Klöster seiner Zeit.
