Die 12 Nidānas (Pali/Sans.: nidāna : Ursache , Grund, Quelle, Ursprung)[1] sind eine Anwendung des buddhistischen pratītyasamutpāda - Konzeptes des abhängigen oder bedingten Entstehens. Sie decken avijja (Unwissenheit) als den Ursprung von dukkha (Leiden) auf.

Sie werden auch in Dīgha Nikāya Sutta 1 und 14 und im Brahmajala Sutta, Vers 3.71 beschrieben.

  1. avidya(sanskr.) - avijja(Pali) -(Unwissenheit)
  2. samskara - sankhara (Impulsive Aneignung)
  3. vijñana - viññana (Bewusstsein)
  4. nama-rupa - nama-rupa (Name und Form)
  5. sadayatana - salayatana (6 Sinne )
  6. sparsha - phassa (Kontakt)
  7. vedana - vedana (Gefühl)
  8. trishna - tanha (Begehren)
  9. upadana - upadana 8Greifen)
  10. bhava - bhava (Werden)
  11. jati - jati (Geburt)
  12. jara-marana - jara-marana (Alter und Tod)
